Attending Blogging Conventions

Blogging Conventions

Are Blogging Conventions Worth the Time and Money?

Over the last 28 years I would estimate I have probably attended somewhere around 50 blogging conventions, conferences, symposiums, etc. .. if not more.

Since I live in Calabasas, CA the first conventions I ever attended were the ones hosted by Commission Junction in Santa Barbara, CA. The conference is called CJ University and is held every year in September.

I have made a lot of connections through these conventions and conferences.. and in fact one of my best friends is someone I met at CJUniversity in 2000.

There are a lot of conventions in the USA as well as a lot of International conventions that are held in a different country each year. There are a lot of general blogging conventions as well as more niche specific conferences and symposiums that focus on specific niches.

There are conferences that focus on the Travel niche, the Finance niche, the Craft niche, the Online Gambling niche, conferences for Podcasters, Social Media marketing conferences, Influencer conferences and more.

Blogging conventions are everywhere, and they attract creators in all niches. But, is attending a blogging convention really worth it?

While some see them as priceless opportunities to network and learn.. others question if the expenses are justified. If you’ve ever wondered whether attending conventions is a smart investment for your future in blogging.. you are not alone.

In my opinion.. YES.. by all means, you can definitely advance your position as a blogger by attending as many conventions as you can comfortably afford!

Some of the media features I have landed were as a result of connections I made at various blogging conventions and conferences. 🥰

Here is one feature article I may never have gotten if not for connecting with the right people at a convention a couple of years ago:

What Are Blogging Conventions?

Blogging conventions are events designed specifically for bloggers to share insights, sharpen skills, and expand their networks.

Whether you’re brand new to blogging or a seasoned pro.. these gatherings can spark growth in ways that working solo behind a laptop often can’t. They’re like a shortcut to learning straight from experts while finding your place in a community that totally gets what you do.

A Gathering for Bloggers:

Blogging can feel isolating at times, right? You spend a lot of time creating content, analyzing data, and planning strategies all alone. Blogging conventions give you the opportunity to spend time meeting and mingling with a lot of other people who do what you do.

These events bring together bloggers from all backgrounds so they can connect, share ideas, and grow together. Imagine walking into a room where everyone understands the hustle of writing posts, building email lists, and nailing SEO.. all without you having to explain what a blogger actually does.

These events are packed with value, including:

  • Inspiration: Surround yourself with people who truly understand your goals.
  • Workshops and Panels: Learn actionable tips from top bloggers.
  • Networking Opportunities: Meet collaborators, sponsors, and even blogging friends.

Think of it like a creative recharge. You step away from your daily grind, meet new people, and leave with fresh ideas to boost your blog. Plus, let’s be honest.. you can only watch so many YouTube tutorials before in-person advice becomes priceless.

Types of Blogging Conventions and/or Conferences:

Not all blogging conventions are the same. There’s no one-size-fits-all, and that’s a good thing. Depending on what you need, you’ll find options tailored to your goals and interests.

  • General Blogging Conventions:
These attract a wide range of bloggers, no matter their focus. They cover everything from content creation and monetization to social media growth and branding. Think of these as the beginner-friendly or one-stop-shop events.
  • Niche-Specific Events:
These zero in on particular industries or topics. For example, you’ll find conferences for travel bloggers, food bloggers, or even parenting bloggers. These events are perfect if you want advice tailored exactly to your niche.

Each type has its perks. Whether you’re looking for hands-on learning or a virtual space to connect.. there is an option that fits both your schedule and your budget.

At the end of the day, blogging conferences are all about meeting your needs as a blogger. These events are designed to help you level up your blog in the way that matters most to you.

Benefits of Attending A Blogging Convention:

Blogging conventions are more than just gatherings.. they are packed with opportunities to grow as a creator. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or meet like-minded individuals.. these events offer a unique mix of education, inspiration, and connection that blogging from home can’t.

Networking Opportunities:

Most times blogging is be a solo gig. Attending a blogging conference lets you break out of your bubble and connect with real people who understand your world. You will have chances to meet:

  • Fellow Bloggers: Exchange ideas, share struggles, and even find accountability partners. Who better to bounce ideas off of than someone in the same boat?
  • Industry Experts: Get face time with pros who have built successful blogs, mastered social media, and/or have turned their side hustle into an extremely successful business.
  • Collaboration Opportunities: Think guest posts, partnerships, or even podcast appearances. A casual conversation in a hallway could turn into a game-changing opportunity for you and your blog.

Blogging conventions are like social media in real life. Instead of DMing someone, you are sharing a coffee with them and swapping stories. You may very well walk in as strangers.. but leave with connections that can take your blog to new heights.

Enjoy Learning From the Experts:

Workshops, panels, and keynote speakers are the heart of most blogging conferences. These sessions are led by people who have walked the path you are on and are eager to share their knowledge as to what works and what doesn’t.

These people know the most up-to-date techniques. Skip the trial-and-error phase and learn strategies that are working now!

Staying Updated on Trends:

Blogging is always changing.. whether it’s search engine algorithms or trending content formats, etc. Conventions keep you ahead of the curve by showcasing what’s new and relevant in the world of blogging.

  • Latest Tools and Tech: See demos of blogging tools, plugins, or software that can save you time or boost your efficiency.
  • Content Strategies: Find out what’s trending in your niche, from new Instagram Reels to long-form content strategies.
  • Marketing Insights: Learn how to adapt to changes in social platforms.. email marketing nd more.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re playing catch-up, these events give you a head start. You will leave with a mountain of information and a ton of notes.. making you feeling prepared and ready to implement fresh ideas!

Access to Exclusive Resources:

Blogging conventions often give you access to perks you wouldn’t get anywhere else. From insider information to free goodies, you may be surprised at what might land in your lap.

Many speakers share handouts.. tutorials, templates, guides and checklists that you can start using immediately.

Often times there are demonstrations. You may get the opportunity to test out the latest blogging tools in person.. sometimes with deep discounts if you purchase at the conference.

Learn from the experiences of seasoned bloggers.. whether it’s about SEO hacks, brand pitches, or growing your following.

These extras can make a huge difference in how you run your blog. It’s like unlocking cheat codes to step up your game faster and smarter.

When you consider all of the benefits.. it is easy to see why blogging conventions are more than just “another business event.” They offer the tools, knowledge, and connections you need to thrive in the blogging space.. and that you may not find anywhere else.

How to Decide if Blogging Conventions Are Right for You:

Blogging conventions sound exciting.. but are they right for you at this point in your blogging career?

Before committing.. it is worth taking a closer look at your goals, your budget, and other considerations. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.. so here’s how to figure out if attending makes sense for your unique situation.

Consider Your Goals:

Why do you want to attend a blogging convention? Be crystal clear about what you’re hoping to achieve.

Write down your goals and prioritize them. If they align with what a specific conference offers, that’s a good sign it’s worth considering.

Evaluate Your Budget:

Attending a blogging convention isn’t cheap.. so crunch the numbers before making a decision. Break down your potential expenses into categories:

  • Conference Ticket: Costs can range from $100 for smaller events up to $1,000 or more for big-name gatherings.
  • Travel and Lodging: For out-of-town conferences, factor in flights, gas, hotels, or Airbnb stays.
  • Meals and Miscellaneous: Budget for food, drinks, and any extras like business cards.

Now, compare these costs to your blogging income.. or your willingness to invest out of pocket. If the expense feels more like a financial setback than an investment.. it might be better to wait until your blog is making more money.

And don’t forget about hidden costs, like the time you will be away from your business. Both your money and your time are part of the budget equation.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Blogging Conventions:

Attending a blogging convention can feel overwhelming if you are not prepared. It’s not just about showing up.. it’s about maximizing the experience to truly benefit to the MAX.

From planning ahead to following up.. there are strategic steps you can take to make every moment count.

Preparation is key to ensuring your time at a blogging conference is well spent. Start by researching everything you can about the event.

Check the Speaker Line-Up: Who’s presenting? Are they experts in areas you are trying to grow in? Prioritize sessions led by people you admire or topics that align with your goals.

Study the Schedule: Conventions are often packed.. and you’ll need to make choices. Highlight sessions, panels, or workshops that are most relevant to you.

Set Goals: Are you there to learn about SEO, network with other bloggers, or meet potential sponsors? Defining your purpose helps you focus on which things will be the most beneficial.

Business Cards: Be sure to always bring business cards! Networking is one of the biggest perks of attending blogging conventions.. and nothing makes it easier than having your business cards handy.

A well-designed business card shows you take your blog seriously.. even if it’s a side project. People meet a ton of attendees at these events. Business cards help them remember you when they’re sorting through the connections they made at the conference.

Keep your cards simple and direct.. include your name, blog name, website URL, and a way to contact you (email or social handle). Bonus points for adding a tagline or niche description to make your blog stand out!

Follow Up Afterward:

The event doesn’t end when you walk out the door. Following up with some of your new connections is how you turn your connections into lasting relationships.

Following up keeps the momentum going. It turns a casual encounter into a collaboration or partnership that could make a real difference in your blogging journey!
